Dropping a coin into Shadow Dancer back in the day was alway a challenging, but rewarding experience - and getting reacquainted with the game recently at 1UP instantly rekindled my love for the classic ninja action :-)
Developed by Sega and released in arcades in 1989, this side-scrolling action game is a spiritual successor to the arcade Shinobi, but with a twist that sets it apart - you fight alongside a loyal canine companion. That’s right, a ninja and his dog, taking down terrorists in a dystopian cityscape. Gotta love the 80s!
The gameplay is tight and fast-paced. You play as a masked ninja (often mistaken for Joe Musashi, though technically unnamed in this arcade version), rescuing hostages and unleashing shurikens and sword slashes with precision.
The real standout is your dog, who can be commanded to attack enemies, adding a strategic layer to the combat. Time your commands right, and he’ll pin down foes; mess up, and he gets hurt and turns into a pup!
Visually, Shadow Dancer is pure late-'80s arcade grit and a good step-up from Shinobi, with detailed and moody backdrops and slick animations. It’s a game that rewards timing, reflexes, and a bit of flair.
If you’re into ninja lore, tight platforming, and a unique companion mechanic, this one’s a must-play. Next time you’re at 1UP Arcade, don’t sleep on Shadow Dancer - it’s stealthy, stylish, and seriously satisfying.
